In 2016, Cata decided to go vegan but struggled to find a protein source to support her plant-based diet that wouldn’t leave her feeling bloated, as many beans do. She then rediscovered a legume she grew up with in Portugal: lupins! Traditionally enjoyed with a beer in the sunshine, Cata had once associated lupins with being unhealthy, but she soon learned that they are 80% protein and fibre, contain no carbs, and don’t cause bloating. Best of all, they promote regenerative agriculture. Wanting to share this “secret” superfood with the world, she founded Tarwi, offering simple, convenient, and delicious foods made from lupins.
